Historical Updates

Entertainment from the past...

This page contains two newspro database dumps. The first is from the earlier years of turkeyland.net. The second is from the defunct turkstra.org site, which used to host a "Turkstra Family" website of sorts. Oddly, the updates on that site are almost more entertaining than the ones on turkeyland. Heh. :-) Enjoy!

Multiple Updates
Posted Wednesday, 7/11/2007 10:40:25 AM by Jeff
I've neglected to add news items lately when updating the site, but there are quite a few new photo albums in addition to a quotes section. The links page was updated at some point too - check it out! :-)

More albums
Posted Saturday, 5/19/2007 2:05:54 PM by Jeff
Added some more albums - all of them were taken with my new Nikon Coolpix P5000 (some with optional telephoto or wide angle lenses) :-) Enjoy!

Added pictures from NCAA Sweet 16 trip - enjoy!

Fixed IE6 Rendering Issues
Posted Tuesday, 3/20/2007 3:36:45 PM by Jeff
Fixed some rather disgusting rendering problems with IE6 and CSS. *shudder* Also re-enabled mod_deflate (new mod_gzip) for lower bandwidth usage and better enduser experience!

Added a bunch more links. I'm not sure why, just got bored I guess...

Updated sophomore year at GHHS
Posted Tuesday, 1/16/2007 10:23:26 PM by Jeff
Yeah, weird I know. I was working on writing the biography section and noticed that Physics had somehow disappeared from my sophomore year at GHHS. I'm not sure at what point it got lost, but I suspect it hasn't been there in quite some time. Pretty sad, actually, since that was one of the most memorable classes I took at GHHS. Nevertheless, it's back now.

15 New Albums

The title says it all...enjoy!

More updates
Posted Thursday, 1/11/2007 11:08:55 AM by Jeff
I've added an FAQ section (it was actually added a while ago) in addition to making some random, minor updates. There is also now a guestbook available once again - check it out, and *sign it*! :)

Hell has frozen over
Posted Wednesday, 12/6/2006 10:17:54 PM by Jeff
That's right, it's ice cold and I'm ready to ski! Something that I personally never thought would happen, turkeyland.net v3.0. That's right - the third major revision of this website *ever*! None of the content is really new at this point, but everything sure looks nicer. Hey, if the movie companies get to do it why can't I? ;-) Regardless, enjoy! I do have a much better and detailed biography that will be posted sometime (probably not anytime soon) - check back often! Uh, yeah...

Update!
Posted Monday, 10/9/2006 4:44:09 PM by Jeff
I've added 34 new photo albums - some of them are actually pretty old, so don't forget to look for the little asterisks (*'s). I also added summaries for the past couple of semesters here at Purdue (no, I haven't graduated yet). The most recent summary includes a "tribute" to Dr. David A. Leppla, Director Emeritus of the Purdue "All-American" Marching Band. I'd encourage anyone reading this to read that as well (it's under Personal Information - Semester Four, the Master's section). Boiler Up!

"New" Photo Albums
Posted Friday, 8/4/2006 1:07:19 AM by Jeff
I integrated all old photo albums from turkstra.net into my own, since turkstra.net is now defunct. It was in a sense sad to see it go, but I hadn't updated the site in literally years. Regardless, its main content lives on, now on turkeyland.net. The historic albums are marked with bold T's. Enjoy!

"Annual Update"
Posted Wednesday, 3/29/2006 1:33:51 PM by Jeff
I guess I wasn't kidding last time I mentioned an annual update. Almost a year later, here's another one! I've added quite a few photo albums and updated the background/logos on a few pages. Enjoy!

"Annual" Update
Posted Thursday, 5/26/2005 12:23:40 AM by Jeff
For the entire four people that ever pay attention to this site, there are 26 new photo albums! I've also added the summary of my first semester in Purdue University's Graduate School. Enjoy!

44 New Albums
Posted Saturday, 1/1/2005 3:59:29 PM by Jeff
As is now tradition, it's been a massive amount of time since the last update. Thus, there are 44 new photo albums. I am also working on a more complete biography, since the one that exists now was written when I was maybe 16, and essentially sucks. It also fails to mention my beautiful girlfriend, Shelley Havrilesko, who is now a large part of my life :). Look for it in another month or two ;-)

Site Update
Posted Wednesday, 1/7/2004 2:40:43 PM by Jeff
As usual I've avoided updating the site for an extended period of time. However, with this update I've redone the navigation bar a little (I don't think that the TI-86/TI-89 programs deserve to be on there, they've now been moved to the downloads section). I've also added both Junior year summaries as well as 26 new photo albums. I plan on adding my first semester Senior year summary sometime in the near future, as well as adding the Capital One Bowl photo albums. Enjoy!

After months of neglect, 37 new photo albums appear!
Posted Monday, 9/22/2003 8:25:45 AM by Jeff
That's right, I finally stopped putting off updating this site and added 37, yes thirty-seven, new photo albums. I'm also planning on adding summaries for my Junior year as well sometime in the near future. We'll see how that goes, though.

Lots of new photo albums...again
Posted Monday, 3/24/2003 9:17:09 PM by Jeff
Continuing tradition now, I've waited a while before actually doing anything with this site. But of course, I've been taking pictures the entire time. They're all up...some are better than others, and if I ever get really motivated I'll finish up my semester summary for Year 3, Semester 1 here Purdue :-).

Massive updates, once again
Posted Sunday, 12/1/2002 12:58:44 AM by Jeff
After an extended period of neglect I've once again updated the site. I've added my fourth semester summary here at Purdue as well as over 20 new photo albums. Yes, over 20. Just shoot me now. :)

Yes, I'm an idiot.
Posted Sunday, 7/28/2002 11:18:04 PM by Jeff
Realized that atom.html has been gone for an extended period of time (rather interesting, as that accounted for a large portion of the hits to this site.) I was wondering why the webstats decreased significantly...*whack*

Run in fear.
Posted Sunday, 7/28/2002 11:02:04 PM by Jeff
I've finally added my first semester sophomore year at Purdue summary. It's incredibly long, due to my attempts to fit my "journal" from the Sun Bowl in there. Regardless, along with that comes two new albums. An interesting bird that was trapped in my truck as well as some images of sunsets and rainbows that were taken on my trip back to West Lafayette.

Six additional albums
Posted Saturday, 6/22/2002 10:57:49 PM by Jeff
I went through and found some older albums that I forgot to add to the website. Check out the pictures area if you're bored :)

Two new albums!
Posted Saturday, 6/22/2002 7:19:05 PM by Jeff
Yes, after an extended period of neglect and total disregard, I've updated the site once again. We have two new albums: A digital tour of my workplace as well as images from a recent trip to Turkey Run State Park here in Indiana. Oh, I also *intend* to get summaries of both semesters of my sophomore year at Purdue up *sometime* soon. Enjoy!

Massive album updates...
Posted Saturday, 3/16/2002 4:09:02 PM by Jeff
I added all of my Sun Bowl pictures along with pics from the first round of the NCAA tournament, which we of course won :) Anyway, someday I'll finish writing my third semester Purdue summary, and that will include a more detailed description of the Sun Bowl trip (I know everyone is just waiting in anticipation...heh)

Updated site, redone album, fun stuff :)
Posted Thursday, 3/14/2002 1:55:56 PM by Jeff
Just like with the other site, turkstra.net, I redid the photo album so it's much easier to update now. I also updated a newer version of the site that had been sitting on my computer for a while. Sometime soon maybe I'll finish my Sun Bowl summary and stuff and put that up, we'll see.

Another semi-large update
Posted Monday, 11/26/2001 1:01:45 AM by Jeff
Well, I finally got motivated once again and went through and revised quite a few sections. I removed some, reformatted others, and generally tried to make the site better. Additionally, I'm finishing up my semester III summary at Purdue University and will have that uploaded sometime in the near future.

Mostly good news, some bad...
Posted Saturday, 10/20/2001 11:15:01 PM by Jeff
Well, as some of you may or may not be aware, the hard drive in the box hosting turkeyland.net started randomly corrupting data over the past few days. As such, I drove home this weekend and replaced the hard drive with a newer, better 13.1GB drive. The results: faster performance, more disk space, and lost statistics. That's right, the first things to go when the old hd started randomly corrupting things were the access logs and webstats. Disappointing at least to me, although I'm sure most of you don't care. Anyway, just about everything statistical has been restarted at day 0, count 0, etc. We'll just have to go from there.

Small behind-the-scenes update
Posted Saturday, 8/25/2001 9:04:31 PM by Jeff
About an hour ago I installed mod_gzip, a small Apache module that compresses text-based files before sending them to the client. This reduces bandwidth usage considerably, and additionally makes browsing any of our sites faster for probably about 95% of the people that visit.

No code red for you!
Posted Tuesday, 8/21/2001 6:56:16 AM by Jeff
Apparently our ISP's poor network configuration tends to make routers hard lock at random due to what they refer to as "massive amounts of code red traffic" (*cough*400 hits/day*cough*). Anyway, it resulted in pretty much being down the entire weekend. We appear to be back up, so hopefully the issue is resolved. We'll just have to wait and see.

We're back up!!
Posted Wednesday, 8/8/2001 1:16:45 AM by Jeff
After a few weeks of downtime, TurkeyLand is back and going strong! The reason for the downtime is that the company we're hosted at moved buildings, and so we obviously had to move with them :) Anyhow, everythings up and going now and we don't anticipate anymore downtimes.

Semi-late update
Posted Wednesday, 6/6/2001 10:10:59 PM by Jeff
Well, in case people were wondering, this past Tuesday (June 5) we were down for a short period of time. Following this downtime the access to this server in general was extremely slow for about an additional 2 hours. The initial downtime was due to yet another RAM upgrade; we now have 192MB of RAM :). The slowness was due to the fact that one of the cables on another computer at CnH (the company hosting us) broke more or less and we temporarily switched it with the one connecting this server. As it stands everything is back up and running now and no more downtimes are anticipated in the near future.

All kinds of updates
Posted Sunday, 5/6/2001 10:20:18 PM by Jeff
I've been busy once again adding stuff to this site (trust me, I'm far more surprised than you are). Let's see...where to begin...Ah yes, I've added a bit more detail to some of the course descriptions for my first semester at Purdue University for starters. I also added an entirely new "section": Purdue University Semester II, and as you guessed, it describes my second semester at college. In addition to that I added a Photo Albums section where I'll put annoying pictures of or relating to myself. A slightly smaller change, I removed a lot of those annoying turkey pictures in the upper left of each page and replaced them with debateably meaningful images. Well, I think that's it for now.

Blah blah blah blah blah
Posted Tuesday, 4/24/2001 8:48:27 AM by Jeff
Sometime in the afternoon this past Saturday (04/21/2001) there was a power outtage at the place where our server sits. Unfortunately nobody was on hand to reset the server and gateway to get them back up and running, and this site was down once again almost the entire weekend. I'm just going to stop saying hopefully this will be the last occurrence, because it seems that every time I say that more bad things happen.

Another weekend without service :-(
Posted Monday, 4/9/2001 5:18:35 PM by Jeff
Yes, once again the gateway computer disappeared over the weekend, eliminating people's ability to visit the website, receive email, and anything else productive. This time it wasn't due to the gateway software, though. It was because the tape backup software that runs automatically decided to generate the Blue Screen of Death and lock the gateway computer. I'm hoping this isn't going to happen again anytime soon, but don't quote me on that :)

Added semester I at Purdue University summary
Posted Thursday, 4/5/2001 11:31:24 PM by Jeff
Finally! I had a couple of hours of free time today, so I wrote up my traditional summary of my classes. As usual, most of it is dedicated to Band. This time I had an excuse for writing so much, though. Going to the Rose Bowl is definately an event that deserves to be documented :-) Anyhow, it's available for all the world to read in my Personal Information section. Check it out, and feel free to send me e-mail regarding errors, complaints, or compliments!

Added TI-89 section and edited content
Posted Saturday, 3/24/2001 11:13:30 PM by Jeff
Well, I now have an official TI-89 programs page. Right now it contains my personal programs and a few apps/utils. Sometime in the future I hope to add to the games area, but we'll see how that goes. I also edited various pages in the website for grammatical errors as well as other revisions.

Newer, more accurate webstats
Posted Friday, 3/23/2001 1:12:44 AM by Jeff
Since the division of turkeyland.net from turkstra.org, the webstats during that month period where we switched have been a little inaccurate. That problem was fixed by taking all records belonging to this site and placing them in the correct log file. We now have accurate webstats for ALL months, not just the past couple. In addition, sites are now grouped by domain and there is additional information available for certain categories on the stats page.

Could be a test
Posted Saturday, 3/17/2001 1:15:51 AM by Jeff
Yes, for the most part it is. I did a little restructuring behind the scenes and wanted to make sure everything still worked. One of these days I'll transfer my TI-89 programs onto here and write a page for them. I was going to do it this week, honest, but I forgot my graph link cable at Purdue. Since I haven't backed up my calculator since the last time I reformatted, everything is still on there :( Soon, though, soon. And, if anyone ever actually reads these posts, send me an e-mail or sign my guest book to let me know. I'd be pleasantly surprised to find out that living people actually visit this site (I can tell from the webstats that people visit, I'm just not sure they're "real" ;-))

Welcome to the "new" TurkeyLand!
Posted Tuesday, 3/13/2001 8:23:33 PM by Jeff
Well, after numerous years of neglect, I finally redesigned the site. The content hasn't changed too much, but hopefully that will change as time progresses too. Enjoy!

Homework, what's that?
Posted Saturday, 3/22/2003 4:51:59 PM by Jeff
Instead of doing homework, I'm doing this. That's okay though, this is more fun (arguably). Anyway, there are a few more albums if you care to check them out, as well as an updated menu bar for spring! :)

Three New Albums
Posted Wednesday, 10/30/2002 6:47:44 PM by Jeff
After months, and I do mean months, of neglect I've posted three new albums. Perhaps I'll have more time next...eh to heck with it, no I won't. :-)

Easter album up
Posted Sunday, 3/31/2002 6:25:42 PM by Jeff
Yup, I got home probably 45 minutes to an hour ago and they're already posted. See how much faster that script makes things :) Anyhow, off to do semi productive things.

I lied...Christmas pictures are available now
Posted Friday, 3/15/2002 3:22:49 PM by Jeff
Actually, instead of waiting until I returned to Purdue, since I had to work last night I loaded the album onto my laptop and brought it to CnH where I uploaded it there. So, they're available ahead of schedule :)

Complete rewrite of album section, updated navigation bar
Posted Thursday, 3/14/2002 12:59:09 AM by Jeff
I completely redid the photo album. Now almost all of the content for a given date is dynamically generated via php. Quite handy, and makes it incredibly easy to update when coupled with Windows XP's ability to generate thumbnails with a simple right click :) Anyway, since I was updating the site I figured might as well change the navigation bar in anticipation of spring. Also, when I get back to Purdue, I'll upload the Christmas pictures from this year (I'm not going to even try on this slow dialup connection).

That's right, we made it past one hundred days! Be afraid, be very afraid. Unfortunately, as one would expect, there was a power outtage soon after we broke the 100 day uptime. Guess we'll have to see how far it goes this time :)

Slight theme change
Posted Saturday, 1/19/2002 6:47:34 PM by Jeff
Well, as it's no longer Christmas, I switched the navigation bar to snowflakes and changed the background back. Sometime when I'm not feeling lazy I'll generate thumbnails of the Christmas 2001 pictures and post them, but I don't see that happening anytime soon.

Two new albums

More albums: Thanksgiving 2001 and Sarah's Choir Concert. Check them out in the Family Pictures section.

Deleted calendar, gave site Christmas-like appearance

Well, nobody really used the calendar anyway, so I deleted it. I also changed the navigation bar and added a nice snowflake background.

Lot's of New Albums

Well, after quite some time of inactivity, I've gotten some new pictures and created a few more photo albums. You can see them all in the pictures section. September 26 - November 3 are all new. Additionally, I changed the menu bar to fit the season once again.

Mostly good news, some bad.

Frightening, isn't it? We surpassed the previous 52 day uptime. Now that we're on a fairly stable Internet connection coupled with a reliable power source, I'm anticipating this uptime to soar even higher, assuming I don't have to shut the box down for maintenance or upgrades anytime soon. We'll just have to wait and see.

Down all weekend once again :-(
Posted Monday, 9/10/2001 12:05:41 PM by Jeff
Well, Charter Communications resolved most of the router hard locking issues, as we've been up for a good 2 weeks without problems. Unfortunately there was a repeat incident Friday after everyone left, prohibiting access to this site and everything hosted on the box. We're back up though, so we'll see how it goes from here.

Small behind-the-scenes update

Bad code red. Bad.
Posted Tuesday, 8/21/2001 6:51:37 AM by Jeff
That's right, the stupid people are out en masse once again. Apparently the ISP we use to host our server has a crappy network setup, as it appears that the code red traffic is somehow being multiplied and sent over each router on the entire internal network. That's all good, except it also apparently tends to hard lock the routers at random. (They try to blame the problem on the fact that we run a webserver, but we all know that code red doesn't care, it uses a randomization scheme to randomly send data to any IP, webserver or not.) Anyway, this all boiled down to almost a complete weekend of no service. The box seemed to stay up all of yesterday, so I'm hoping maybe the issue is resolved. We'll see.

2 New Albums

Well, I've added two new albums...my birthday party and two pics of Jake & Josh in front of their house. Check them out in the photo album :)

We're Back!!!
Posted Monday, 8/6/2001 12:34:28 PM by Jeff
Well, after a few weeks of downtime, we're finally back online. The reason? CnH Enterprises, the business that hosts us, moved to a new building. We've gotten the high speed Internet access back up, and now have a dedicated, static IP address that won't change. What's this mean you ask? Well quite simply, there should be no more downtimes due to DNS changes. Now we only have to worry about power outages, Internet outages, and the like :-)

New Domain!
Posted Thursday, 7/5/2001 1:41:36 PM by Jeff
Welcome to our new home, turkstra.net. We moved from turkstra.org for a few reasons. First, .org makes us sound like an organization, which we are not. Second, there has and probably always will be a slim chance that InterNIC will start enforcing the policy of "only official non-profit organizations can use .org" in which case we'd be in trouble. Aside from that, there were a lot of behind-the-scene changes to make the transition work, if you notice any broken links or anything referencing turkstra.org PLEASE let me know as soon as you can. Everything should be turkstra.net now :)

New albums...

I think the subject more or less explains the full intent of this news post. I've just finished importing all the photographs and generating thumbnails, so head on over to the Family Pictures area to check them out.

Much needed memory upgrade
Posted Monday, 5/7/2001 9:11:55 PM by Jeff
I've just returned from installing a 128MB DIMM in the server, replacing the old 16MB chunk of RAM. Already I've noticed a considerable increase in speed of the server, at least when doing memory-intensive things. The additional RAM should also help in the unlikely event that we actually start getting a large number of visitors at the same time. As with most upgrades, this did result in a short 3-5 minute downtime, but nothing significant.

Lot's of new pictures
Posted Monday, 5/7/2001 7:12:17 PM by Jeff
Well, upon returning from Purdue I picked up my Dad's digital camera/palmcorder which was packed with all kinds of pictures. Easter, Christmas, and quite a few others. Feel free to check them out in the Family Pictures section :)

Removal of a few photo albums
Posted Sunday, 5/6/2001 10:08:38 PM by Jeff
Yup, that's about the only update I have today. I removed I think 3 of the albums that were completely about me and moved them to turkeyland.net's new photo album section. Aside from that, nothing's really changed.

Well, it's spring

Not too much to say, but I was bored and figured a change to our navigation bar would be appropriate. It is now covered with little springtime animals.

Posted Monday, 3/26/2001 1:56:11 PM by Jeff
How terribly unfortunate this is. 3 days away from a new uptime record and we had to restart the server :(. Ah well, guess we'll just have to wait another 52 days :) In case anyone's curious, the reason for the restart is because (I think) the ssh daemon died. There's really no easy way to fix that unless you're sitting in front of the box, and since I'm 220mi away from it that becomes somewhat difficult. Hopefully it won't do this again. Either way, it resulted in about a 2-3 minute downtime (which really shouldn't have been that noticeable).

Newer, more accurate webstats
Posted Friday, 3/23/2001 1:10:45 AM by Jeff
After spending a few minutes staring blankly at my screen, I realized that the webstats from a few months ago for turkstra.org are inaccurate. The reason is that for a month or two there we counted all sites hosted on the server (ie, turkeyland.net, starwars-irc.net, etc.) in the same log file. They were contributing to many of the hits. I removed these entries from the logs and put them in the correct logs, thus creating much more accurate webstats. In addition to that, I've grouped by domain and added additional pages that allow you to see more specific information about some of the areas on the stats page. Overall, the stats are much more informative and accurate now.

Bug fixes & behind-the-scenes updates
Posted Friday, 3/16/2001 9:36:59 PM by Jeff
Fixed the accidental "double posting" of a guestbook entry. Also, guestbook.shtml now uses server-side include to dynamically generate the guestbook part, making it easier to update layout changes in the future. Now if only the message board could be so easy. heh. Also restructured filesystem slightly (users won't notice) by moving the ssi for news.shtml to a ssi directory (all ssi stuff will now go there). Finally, moved javairc to /home/cservice, where it should've been to begin with seeing as it's part of starwars-irc.net and not turkstra.org.

Over half way to a new uptime record
Posted Wednesday, 3/7/2001 8:01:58 PM by Jeff
That's right, the Internet gateway may have been down for two days, but the server itself is still up and running strong. With a new power supply (that's why it went down a while back after a 52 day straight uptime), it should be set to far surpass the old record. Of course, that is assuming something bad doesn't happen like a power failure. We'll just have to wait and see.

Unscheduled downtime

In case anyone attempted to visit our website or check their e-mail over the weekend (Saturday March 3 to Sunday March 4), they may have noticed that our server was down. It technically wasn't the server that went down. It was the gateway computer that provides Internet access for the server. The problem has been resolved, and we've taken action to help prevent it from recurring in the future.

Why did the nuclear bomb cross the road?

Argh. I finally finished development/implementation of the news archiving system. Designing templates using Microsoft Publisher is a pain. It likes fixed-width pages, but I need them to grow as more information is added. Ironically, it didn't take much tweaking with notepad to fix that. Anyhow, the archive area is now accessible from the bottom of the news page if you're bored.

Updates and more updates

Well, It's 4:22pm and I'm fully conscious. I've restructured the website slightly, giving news its own little area. I also added a guestbook for people to sign if they're bored and want to let us know they visited. (Yes, I know I forgot to update all of the "Last Updated" things at the bottom of the pages). Finally, I changed the design of the navigation bar from snow flakes to something more traditional (It really doesn't seem like winter to me anymore). When spring roles around I'll try to see if I can find a more appropriate "theme".

WE ARE NOT A TOWING SERVICE
Posted Friday, 2/23/2001 1:15:17 AM by Jeff
Yes, that's correct. We are NOT, repeat NOT a towing service. How the heck someone could remotely think that we are is beyond me. Despite this trivial fact, some (stupid) individual called me while I was home and asked if they had reached Turkstra.Org. I replied yes, and they then proceeded to ask if we were a towing service. I stated no, and they hung up. It's really quite fortunate that they hung up when they did, because had I been given a slightly longer period of time to consider the shear stupidity of what they just said, I would have started yelling at them. So, for all of you stupid people out there, we are NOT a towing service (well, if you pay me enough money, I might tow your vehicle...) And yes, I realize that in retrospect if someone is stupid enough to think we're a towing service at first glance they probably won't read this post, and will ultimately end up calling me again.

Don't ask, the explosion had nothing to do with me.

I'm surprised. Anyhow, here's a semi-official news post. Turkstra.Org now has a news system (you may or may not have noticed). I can now post news whenever I want (you can too if you really want me to add you to the news script, just ask). The truly frightening thing is that this could potentially get abused when I'm semi-conscious and awake after the hours of around 1am.

I want my name capitalized

I'm up at 1:15am in the morning for one true and simple reason: Diane Ruhs said "I'm not tired"
